The Centre for Sport & Human Rights (CSHR) is developing a new series of short films and immersive content exploring critical issues on the sport and human rights agenda. Launching in 2024, the series is being produced by BBC Studios’ BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions with a focus on inclusion, equity, health and access. Organizations are invited to propose stories for consideration through October 20.
The new series will spotlight a variety of initiatives that contribute to a vision of inclusive, equitable and responsible sport. Each story intends to demonstrate how sport – from elite to grassroots level – can advance human rights through social inclusion and promoting healthier societies.
CSHR is working to advance a world of sport that fully respects and promotes human rights by generating awareness, building capacity and delivering impact. It upholds the Sporting Chance Principles and provides thought leadership, innovation and knowledge that supports the strengthening of human rights-based systems and practices in sport.
“Playing or watching sport is an important part of people’s lives across the globe and has the power to unite disparate communities through a shared love of competition. However, sport does not exist in a vacuum and the experience of sport can be damaged when it reflects societal challenges. Yet through its near-universal reach and fostering of deep emotional connection, sport has a distinct ability to unite, inspire and lead positive change. How can this potential power be harnessed for good?” states the organization.
CSHR CEO, Mary Harvey, voiced her support via social media by saying: “So excited to embark on this new project with BBC StoryWorks to bring human rights in sport to life. Sometimes the term ‘human rights’ needs unpacking to describe what that includes. But an image or a story makes it tangible and real. This series will do just that!”
The range of stories planned for the new series will feature individuals and organizations from the world of sport, including event owners, organizers, sponsors, broadcasters and more. The content will consider the following areas of impact:
- Athletes: where are gaps in athlete pay, funding and visibility being addressed?
- Everyday sport: how is the organization of day-to-date sport being changed to create inclusive cultures and increase participation?
- Sporting events: what changes are being made to organizing sporting events to ensure equality in access, pay, funding and visibility?
- The sport and human rights movement: who are the leaders promoting human rights in sport and beyond?
Content will be hosted on a dedicated microsite on BBC.com and will include a multi-platform digital campaign to engage audiences among the BBC’s 155 million monthly browsers. Partnering organizations will also work closely with production to craft the content and amplify the series on their own channels. Share your stories through October 20!
