Fred Turner

Fred Turner (He/Him)

Executive Director

Fred Turner heads Beyond Sport’s global efforts to place sport at the heart of addressing the world’s most pressing social issues.

He has driven transformational growth at the Foundation, launching new initiatives, boosting income and consistently seeking new ways to innovate across the sector. He oversees staff delivery of several multi-million dollar programs and partnerships with major organizations including Under Armour, the NBA, the IOC, Z Zurich Foundation, New Balance Foundation, Unilever, NFL, ESPN and Sun Life.

With over a decade of experience in sport, development and social impact, he is passionate about bringing people of diverse backgrounds and experiences together – united by a specific cause, sector or focus – to trigger lasting change through education and collaboration.

Before Beyond Sport, he worked with the UK’s prominent Sport Industry Group as well as the global corporate engagement initiative, Square Mile Relay, where he played a key role in delivering events, production and content offerings.

Fred sits on the Commonwealth’s Open Ended Working Group for the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the BOND SDP Group and is a regular judge for the Sport Industry Awards in the UK.

In his spare time, he can be found dancing down Holloway Road in London singing Arsenal songs, working out, searching for the best coffee spots, checking out live music, strolling through local parks and markets or traveling to new places with his wife.

Karen Asare

Karen Asare (She/Her)

Director, Content & Communications

Karen is our strategic communications lead, with a wealth of experience in campaign development, partnership activation and public advocacy. She excels at creating digital content and devising communication strategies that engage global audiences to tackle critical social issues.

She oversees communications for the Foundation, working with her team to advance Beyond Sport’s mission, amplifying the work of our global network and expand public awareness of sport’s ability to drive positive social change.

Before joining Beyond Sport, Karen led successful communications campaigns for partners like Gucci’s global “Chime for Change” initiative and Participant Media’s “Take Part” platform. She also managed corporate citizenship programs for Reebok, Genentech and Novartis. Karen’s experience extends to television production, where she worked on three Olympic Games and various sporting events for NBC Olympics and NBC Sports, earning four Sports Emmy Awards.

She holds a B.A. in Media Studies with a minor in International Studies from Penn State University. In her free time, Karen enjoys reading, traveling around the world and chilling out with friends and family.

Adam Burgess

Adam Burgess (He/Him)

Director, Programmes

Adam leads program operations at Beyond Sport, including fund design, grant applications, assessments and ensuring smooth operations with due diligence. He oversees delivery of a wide range of programs addressing mental wellbeing, physical health, equity, refugee inclusion, youth empowerment and more.

Before Beyond Sport, Adam spent a decade growing the impact of Coaches Across Continents, managing programs with Disney, ESPN, Nike and the Swedish Postcode Foundation. Through this work he has comprehensive knowledge of the global sport for social change landscape, understanding the key factors and social challenges affecting the communities organizations serve.

Adam holds an MBA in International Sports Management from Coventry University and a BA in Sports Studies from Stirling University. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his kids, playing golf, biking and travel.

Nick Coltman

Nick Coltman (He/Him)

Coordinator, Programmes

Nick is a recent graduate of Loughborough University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management. At Beyond Sport, he supports the programs team across various processes, from market research to impact measurement. He is passionate about leveraging sport for social change and is dedicated to helping Beyond Sport create positive, lasting impact.

While at Loughborough, Nick completed a year-long industry placement at Sport England, gaining first-hand experience in the sport development sector. He contributed to major initiatives, including the Sport England Small Grants program and the Commonwealth Games Legacy Giveaway, deepening his understanding of key industry challenges.

In his free time, Nick enjoys playing rugby and supporting his beloved Leicester City through thick and thin.

Liberty Harman

Liberty Harman (She/Her)

Manager, Events & Operations

Liberty is an experienced events and operations professional with over six years in the industry. Known for her exceptional organizational skills and keen eye for detail, she consistently delivers outstanding experiences. At Beyond Sport, Liberty brings her expertise in coordinating large-scale sporting events, leveraging her strategic approach to ensure smooth and successful delivery.

Before joining Beyond Sport, Liberty worked at London’s MBN Events, where she coordinated major events with Saracens Rugby Club, managing them on time, within budget and to the highest standards.

She loves staying active by exercising and taking care of dogs, combining her passion for fitness with her love for animals.

Bailey Harris

Bailey Harris (She/Her)

Manager, Marketing

Bailey develops Beyond Sport’s marketing strategies and implements digital, growth and brand campaigns to support program initiatives and expand the organization’s reach. She is an integrated marketing professional who specializes in brand and messaging strategy, paid and earned media programs and creative campaign execution.

Bailey has nearly 10 years of experience in nonprofits, entertainment and tech. Before joining Beyond Sport, she led sports-focused marketing and influencer projects at 1440 Foods. She also spearheaded successful 360 campaigns at companies like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, AMC Networks and Ibotta.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Political Science from Simpson College. Personally, Bailey enjoys hiking with her dog Alfie and dreams of watching every movie and TV show ever created.

Carly Heinz

Carly Heinz (They/Them)

Director, Development

Carly leads Beyond Sport’s fundraising and partnership development efforts, working to secure the resources needed to drive the Foundation’s mission forward. They bring 14 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and a competitive spirit from their background as a former tennis player.

Before joining Beyond Sport, Carly honed their skills in fundraising at Epic Foundation, Roc Nation and PAN Foundation. They are also an AmeriCorps alumnus.

Carly holds a BA in Peace Studies from Goucher College where they played NCAA Division III tennis for four years and attended New York University’s Irish and Irish American Studies graduate program. In their spare time, Carly can be found traveling, attending as many concerts as possible, watching tennis and last, but certainly not least, supporting Liverpool FC.

Tarryn Horner

Tarryn Horner (She/Her)

Senior Manager, Grants & Programmes

Tarryn manages key strategic programs and partnerships at Beyond Sport, including the Olympism365 Innovation Hub, a collaboration with the IOC and Women Win. She’s dedicated to using sport to drive youth leadership, equality and inclusion. 

Before joining Beyond Sport, Tarryn developed her expertise in sport for development, programs and grants management at Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Football Foundation. She  is also an avid sportswoman and clinical health professional who has lived and worked in South Africa, Vietnam and the UK. 

She has a Bachelor’s and Honors degrees in Sports Science and Biokinetics from Stellenbosch University and a Master’s degree in Sport Business and Leadership from Loughborough University. Tarryn enjoys spending her time outdoors in nature, hanging out with friends around a good South African braai, trying new things and seeing new places. 

Claudia Larrea

Claudia Larrea (She/Her)

Manager, Grants & Programs

Claudia supports the seamless implementation of grant funding and capacity building at Beyond Sport, working closely with the programs team in the UK. She leads operations for a variety of partner programs, Beyond Sport-owned funds  and new initiatives, including Head In The Game and the Return to Play Fund.

Before joining Beyond Sport, Claudia spent a decade enhancing local education and wellness programs across the U.S. Most recently, she served as the Evanston Program Director for Chicago’s MetroSquash, where she successfully launched and expanded a satellite site in Evanston, Illinois.

Claudia has a BA in International Studies and an MA in Education and Social Change from the University of Miami and a Master’s in International Public Health from Lund University. When she’s not at work, you’ll find her attending Gotham FC and USWNT matches, watching the NWSL on TV, reading all things women’s football and playing co-ed whenever she has the chance. For Claudia, there’s no such thing as too much football.

Ushma Makwana

Ushma Makwana (She/Her)

Manager, Content

Ushma is an experienced digital creator passionate about producing unique and dynamic content across editorial, video and graphic production. She manages Beyond Sport’s online presence, overseeing campaigns and storytelling for the organization’s global newsletter and social media platforms. Ushma focuses on sourcing and publishing stories that highlight the social impact of Beyond Sport’s programs, its global network and the sport for social change sector, with an emphasis on multimedia production and engagement.

Before joining Beyond Sport, Ushma worked on website development, social media management, marketing, graphic design and video production for private clients.

She holds a BA in Journalism from City University, London and also freelances as a videographer and photographer. In her spare time, Ushma enjoys anything creative – whether it’s creating art, video editing or graphic design. She’s also a huge movie buff and loves watching them on the big screen, especially anything MCU-related.

Abby West

Abby West (She/Her)

Senior Manager, Grants & Programmes

Abby works closely with our grant partners, managing projects with over 35 organizations, including the Rexona Breaking Limits Program, Sun Life and the NFL Foundation UK Community Partnerships. She’s there every step of the way, from applications to assisting grant partners to reporting, making sure everything goes off without a hitch.

Before Beyond Sport, Abby spent time at London Sport, where she helped youth clubs and community groups in need secure funding and access free urban sport programs.

Abby has a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Loughborough University. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking, cycling and running.

Finance

Will Isemann

Will Isemann

Director, Finance

Will is the Finance Director of Benchmark Group, the holding company of Beyond Sport. He is responsible for all financial, accounting, banking, treasury, tax, company secretarial and risk duties across the Group.

Will is a Big-4 trained Chartered Accountant at PWC who for the last 20+ years has worked in several senior finance positions primarily in the Media, Digital, Retail and Live Event sectors, for brands including ITV, Sky, Entain, Jigsaw Fashion, and on assignments including fundraising, corporate restructuring and reorganisation and in-depth financial modelling and analysis.

An Economics graduate from Loughborough University of Technology, Will is a keen sports enthusiast – especially in association football and tennis – and believes strongly in sports almost unique ability to bring people together from varied and different backgrounds to improve society.

Michael Reilly

Assistant

Michael works for Beyond Sport holding company Benchmark, a group of sports related companies that invest in the power of togetherness. He assists in the day to day running of the company’s financial business.

Karen Smith

Karen Smith

Manager

Karen is a qualified accountant and a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. She joined Beyond Sport’s holding company, Benchmark, in 2013 after 11 years in the hospitality industry. She oversees client and general budgets across Benchmark and facilitated the start-up of Beyond Sport’s US office in terms of financial reporting and budgeting.

Karen previously worked for Charlotte’s Holdings, a family restaurant group where she had full accountability for their operational running, including producing Monthly Management Accounts, Human Resources and Marketing.

Holly Warman

Holly Warman

Management Accountant

Holly is responsible for a wide range of roles across the Benchmark Group – Beyond Sport’s holdings company – assisting in the production of management accounts. She joined Benchmark straight from school in 2017 and has since completed her Level 3 AAT and Level 4 AAT. Holly is currently working towards being CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) qualified.

Hayley Rose

Hayley Rose

Manager

Hayley channels her passion for people to head up the Human Resources Department for Benchmark, Beyond Sport’s holding company. She is responsible for the general day-to-day management of the HR function as well as the oversight of strategic initiatives related to Learning & Development, DEI, Recruitment, Processes & Policies and Rewards & Initiatives.

Prior to this role, Hayley worked on operations, logistics and administration for six years as Senior Events Manager for Beyond Sport. She received her CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development) Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management in 2020.

Akira Roberts

Akira Roberts

Executive

Akira began her Human Resources journey with Benchmark, Beyond Sport’s holding company. She assists on any queries related to the company, HR and administration and appreciates the opportunity to solve a challenge. Prior to Benchmark, she worked in childcare at a Nursery (ages 0-5).

Akira is currently working towards her HR Support Level 3 qualification with a goal of progressing to Level 5.
