For Tuesday’s recognition of World Mental Health Day, we were excited to launch Head In The Game, a multi-year program of Beyond Sport powered by Z Zurich Foundation in collaboration with Zurich North America. The initiative was created to leverage the world of sport to positively impact youth mental wellbeing in the United States in response to the national emergency declared there.
Central to the program is the #HeadInTheGame multimedia Awareness Campaign. The youth-centered initiative offers free online learning resources, tips and inspiration to support, empower and create a safe space for young people to learn and engage freely on mental wellbeing. And with studies showing that youth of color, LGBTQ+ youth and girls are suffering mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and self-harm at even higher rates, there is a special focus on tools tailored for them.
Co-created with Beyond Sport’s sister company, thinkBeyond, the campaign unites the overall program mission of prevention, promotion and attitudinal change. In the coming months, we are excited to bring on inspirational “Collaborators” – athletes and teams spanning community, collegiate and professional sport – who will share their experiences and tips through narratives and videos to further support young people.
New content will be added weekly on the site’s Resource Hub and across social media channels. These include everything from how to cope with big issues in the world to navigating challenges at home. And to foster youth leadership, young people are also taking part – sharing personal tips on ways they take care of their mental health, for example.
The campaign features resources for parents, caregivers and guardians to nurture understanding and connection. Helplines across the program’s target states and nationally are also listed for young people who need targeted professional support.
Head In The Game is dedicated to making mental wellbeing an everyday conversation, eliminating stigmas and building community and resilience. We especially want to know what to hear from teens about the campaign resources. Included on the site with each resource is a survey to make it easy to do so. Please let us know your feedback and what other content would be helpful for you!
