The Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport and partners have launched a photo competition and exhibition to celebrate women and girls in sport. Building on tennis legend Serena Williams’ words, the “Overpower. Overtake. Overcome: A Visual Tribute to Women & Sport” contest wants to reflect women and girls “in sport in all their diversity, striving to overpower stereotypes, overtake obstacles and overcome barriers across all walks of life.”
Entrants are being encouraged to submit their interpretations of the theme, telling the story of challenges or triumphs by June 6. As stated on the website, images are meant to depict “global women, real women and female role models from rural fields, school playgrounds, refugee camps to elite sports stadiums, women who are challenging the status quo, leveling out the playing fields and pushing for a transformation, with resilience and courage despite sparse resources and multiple challenges.”
Overpower submissions are meant to reflect women and girls in sport defying stereotypes, while Overtake should reflect obstacles being surmounted and Overcome to depict barriers being broken. The competition is open to professionals and amateurs, regardless of age, gender or nationality. Accompanying captions and /or short descriptions may be submitted in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese or Spanish.
Alongside UNESCO, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UN Women, UNAIDS, MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Sport for Social Change Network Africa and Bobbi Brown, the Global Observatory will select photos for a global traveling photo exhibit. The images will be shown in prestigious locations across France, South Africa, Senegal and Switzerland including art galleries, museums, UN offices in Geneva, Dakar, Johannesburg and Paris, and during the Paris 2024 Olympics and beyond. The winning picture will be shown as part of a high-impact exhibition organized by UNESCO at its Paris headquarters.
A virtual exhibition is also being planned and a coffee table book is to be published at the end of the year. Proceeds will be donated to organizations using physical education, physical activity and sport (PEPAS) to empower women and advance their health and rights.
The Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport is a global convenor and repository of research and expertise on gender equality and sport, physical education and physical activity (sport+). Building on the existing gender and sport movements across the world, the non-profit is dedicated to closing knowledge gaps and enabling actors to overcome global and systemic inequalities to advance gender equality for children and women in all their diversity in and through sport.
